DIABETES
Sir Steve Redgrave faced a major challenge in 1997 when he was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. At the time, Steve initially believed the diagnosis would bring an end to his rowing career. Managing the condition while continuing to train and compete at an elite level seemed almost impossible, particularly with the physical demands of Olympic sport. Originally thought to have type 1 diabetes, he was later diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, requiring him to adapt both physically and mentally to life with the condition.
With the support of medical experts, careful management, and determination, Steve was able to continue competing and went on to achieve one of the greatest moments in Olympic history by winning his fifth consecutive gold medal. Since then, he has worked to raise awareness and challenge misconceptions surrounding type 2 diabetes. Sir Steve has spoken openly about the stigma attached to the condition, which is often unfairly associated with obesity, poor diet, or viewed as less serious. By sharing his own experience, he has helped encourage greater understanding and support for those living with diabetes. He has also supported Diabetes UK as an Ambassador, helping the charity raise awareness, educate the public, and support people living with diabetes across the UK.

COLITIS
Sir Steve Redgrave faced one of the toughest periods of his career when he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 1992, just months before the Barcelona Olympic Games. Around 15 weeks before he was due to compete, Steve became seriously ill and was left in agonising pain, making both training and everyday life extremely difficult. At a time when he needed to be performing at his peak physically and mentally, he was instead dealing with the uncertainty and exhaustion that came with the condition.
Following his diagnosis, Steve began treatment and gradually regained his strength and performance levels. His determination to continue competing despite such significant health challenges highlighted his resilience and mental toughness. Beyond sport, Sir Steve has used his platform to support others living with the condition and has been a dedicated supporter of Crohn’s & Colitis UK since 1994, helping to raise awareness and understanding of inflammatory bowel diseases.
DYSLEXIA
Sir Steve Redgrave has spoken openly about living with dyslexia and the challenges it created throughout his life and career. Struggling at school as a child, his dyslexia was first identified by the headmistress at Burford Junior School when he was 11 years old. Although receiving a diagnosis helped him better understand his difficulties, there was far less awareness and support available in 1974 than there is today. Steve attended extra English lessons as a child, which unexpectedly introduced him to the captain of Marlow Rowing Club, a connection that would later lead him into rowing.
Despite his extraordinary success, dyslexia has remained an ongoing challenge for Steve, particularly in his post-competitive career, where public speaking, reading, and writing form a major part of his work. As a father to two dyslexic children, he has continued to advocate for greater awareness and support for neurodivergent young people. Sir Steve has publicly called on the government to provide electronic libraries of textbooks and educational resources, helping ensure children with dyslexia have better access to learning and the support they need to thrive.
