SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS
Sir Steve Redgrave built one of the most successful careers in the history of rowing, dominating the sport for more than two decades across national and international competition. Renowned for his consistency, endurance and leadership, Steve achieved remarkable success at the highest level, competing across disciplines including Coxless Pairs, Coxless Fours, Singles and Doubles.
Alongside his achievements at the Olympic Games, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and Henley Royal Regatta, Redgrave also enjoyed major success on the World Cup circuit. Between 1997 and 2000, he won multiple World Cup gold medals in Coxless Fours across Germany, Austria, Belgium, and Switzerland, consistently dominating international competition during the latter stages of his career. His remarkable longevity, resilience, and ability to maintain elite performance across different generations of rowing established him as one of Britain’s greatest sporting icons.

Sir Steve Redgrave won five consecutive Olympic gold medals between 1984 and 2000, becoming one of Britain’s most celebrated athletes. He also claimed a bronze Olympic medal in 1988.

At the 1986 Commonwealth Games, Sir Steve Redgrave won three gold medals in the Single Sculls, Coxless Pair and Coxed Four events. As rowing has not returned to the Commonwealth Games since 1986, Steve remains the reigning champion in all three disciplines.

Sir Steve Redgrave enjoyed major success at the Henley Royal Regatta, winning the Queen Mother Challenge Cup, Stewards’ Challenge Cup, Prince Philip Cup, Silver Goblets and Diamond Sculls across disciplines of Coxless Four, Coxless Pair, Coxed Fours, Singles and Doubles.

Sir Steve Redgrave holds a unique place in British Olympic history as one of only two athletes to carry Team GB’s flag at two Olympic Opening Ceremonies, proudly leading the nation in Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996. He also played a memorable role in the Olympic Torch relays for Beijing 2008 and London 2012, carrying the torch into the stadium during the iconic London Opening Ceremony.

BRITISH ORDERS OF CHIVALRY
Sir Steve Redgrave received several prestigious honours through the British honours system in recognition of his outstanding contribution to rowing and British sport.
In 1987, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) following his early Olympic success, including gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. The MBE recognises significant achievement and service within a profession or community. In 1997, Redgrave was promoted to Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), a higher-ranking honour awarded for prominent national contributions. By then, he had become one of Britain’s most successful Olympians. In the 2001 New Year Honours, Redgrave was appointed a Knight Bachelor for “services to Rowing”. He received the knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace on 1 May 2001, earning the title “Sir”.

2000
In 2000, Sir Steve Redgrave was named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. This finished the perfect year for Steve, after he claimed his fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal.
2001
In 2001, Steve received the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award and was nominated for Sportsman of the Year. Steve was later appointed as a Member of the Laureus World Sports Academy in 2011.
2011
In 2011, Sir Steve Redgrave was honoured to receive the BBC Lifetime Achievement Award. He was presented with the award by HRH Princess Anne at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony.
DOCTORATES
Sir Steve Redgrave has received several honorary doctorates in recognition of his extraordinary sporting achievements and contribution to British sport. In 2001, Heriot-Watt University awarded him the Honorary Degree of Doctor of the University, having previously presented him with an Honorary Blue in 1997. That same year, Loughborough University awarded him an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Technology. In 2013, the University of Edinburgh awarded Redgrave an honorary doctorate in recognition of his outstanding sporting achievements and role as a sports ambassador.
PATRON OF THE JAGUAR ACADEMY OF SPORT
Sir Steve Redgrave is a Patron of the Jaguar Academy of Sport and has played a key role in supporting and inspiring the next generation of British athletes. Launched in 2010 alongside fellow sporting icons including Sir Ian Botham, Gareth Edwards, Dame Kelly Holmes and Denise Lewis, the Jaguar Academy of Sport was created to recognise, celebrate and nurture emerging sporting talent across the UK. Through its Bursary Fund, the Jaguar Academy of Sport provides vital support to young athletes demonstrating exceptional dedication and potential.

Sir Steve Redgrave competed on Dancing on Ice in 2025 alongside professional skater Vicky Ogden. Although eliminated third on 2 February 2025, Steve remained a popular contestant throughout the series.
