5X OLYMPIC CHAMPION
Sir Steve Redgrave first represented Great Britain at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games, competing in the Coxed Four and immediately announcing himself on the world stage with his first Olympic gold medal. That victory marked the beginning of a remarkable Olympic journey that would span five consecutive Games and more than 16 years at the very top of international rowing. At the 1988 Summer Olympics, Steve secured gold in the Coxless Pair and a bronze medal in the Coxed Pair. Four years later, at the 1992 Summer Olympics, he defended his Olympic title in the Coxless Pair. His partnership with fellow rowing legend Matthew Pinsent became one of the most dominant pairings the sport has ever seen, with the duo earning worldwide admiration for their relentless standards and competitive success. The 1996 Summer Olympics delivered one of the defining moments of Steve’s career.
He won a fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal in the Coxless Pair, an achievement made even more significant as it was the only gold medal won by the entire British Olympic team across all sports at those Games. By this point, the crews Steve rowed in had become synonymous with excellence, dominating world rowing throughout the 1990s. Steve completed his unprecedented Olympic achievement at the 2000 Summer Olympics, winning gold in the Coxless Four. The triumph secured his place in history as the only man to win gold medals at five consecutive Olympic Games in an endurance sport. During the medal ceremony in Sydney, he was presented with a Gold Olympic Pin by the IOC President in recognition of his extraordinary accomplishments. Following the Games, Steve retired from competitive rowing, bringing to a close one of the finest careers ever seen in British sport. In the years leading up to his final Olympic appearance, Steve starred in the BBC documentary series Gold Fever, which followed the Coxless Four as they prepared for Sydney 2000. The programme offered audiences an unprecedented insight into the pressures, sacrifices and teamwork required to compete for Olympic gold.
9x WORLD CHAMPION
Away from the Olympics, Steve enjoyed enormous success at the World Rowing Championships, becoming a nine-time World Champion across the Coxed Pair, Coxless Pair and Coxless Four disciplines. His world titles came in 1986, 1987, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998 and 1999, alongside silver medals in 1987 and 1989, and a bronze medal in 1990.
3x COMMONWEALTH GOLDS
He also represented England at the 1986 Commonwealth Games, winning three gold medals in the Single Sculls, Coxless Pair and Coxed Four.
RETIREMENT
Following retirement, Steve continued to make a major impact across sport, business and public life. In 2006, he completed the London Marathon, raising a record £1.8 million for charity. He later appeared in Top Ground Gear Force for Sport Relief, took part in the Olympic Torch Relay for the 2008 Summer Olympics, and became one of the final torch bearers at the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony.
Steve has remained closely connected to rowing and elite performance. He became Patron of the Jaguar Academy of Sport in 2010, rowed aboard the Gloriana during the Diamond Jubilee Pageant for Queen Elizabeth II, and later served as High-Level Performance Director of the Chinese Rowing Association, helping guide China towards ambitious Olympic medal targets for 2020 and 2024. In 2015, he was elected Chairman of the Henley Royal Regatta, a role he held until 2025, and he also serves as Honorary President of British Rowing.
Alongside his sporting commitments, Steve has worked extensively as a coach and mentor, supporting members of the Team GB rowing squad as well as elite athletes outside rowing, including Mo Farah. He also launched The Coachsters App, designed to support coaching and performance development.
MEDIA & COMMERCIAL ROLES
Steve’s influence stretches beyond sport into media, publishing and business. He launched FiveG, a fairtrade cotton clothing brand sold through Debenhams, appeared as a contestant on Dancing on Ice, and held commercial roles with organisations including Ted’s Health, Gleeds, Specsavers, the BBC, Step One and Wavetricity. He is also the author of several books, including Inspired, Enduring Success: Lessons from Business on Long-Term Results & How to Achieve Them, Great Olympic Moments, A Golden Age, You Can Win At Life! and Steven Redgrave’s Complete Book of Rowing.
