SIR STEVE REDGRAVE CALLS TO CLEAN UP THE THAMES
Olympic rowing legend Sir Steve Redgrave has publicly supported the work of River Action UK in its campaign to clean up the River Thames. Ahead of the Schools’ Head of the River Race, which welcomed nearly 3,000 young rowers, Sir Steve signed a letter to Environment Secretary Steve Reed calling for urgent action to tackle pollution in the river. Coordinated by River Action, the campaign highlighted the damaging impact of sewage discharges and failing infrastructure. In his letter, Sir Steve urged the government to end pollution for profit by water companies and strengthen environmental regulators so polluters can be properly investigated and held accountable.
Sir Steve Redgrave has continued to support River Action UK’s campaign for cleaner rivers by backing efforts to protect rowers from the dangers of polluted water. Working alongside British Rowing and The Rivers Trust, River Action helped launch official safety guidance advising rowers how to reduce the risk of illness caused by sewage-contaminated waterways. Sir Steve highlighted the unacceptable health risks facing young athletes competing on the Thames, calling for urgent action to stop sewage discharges. River Action also revealed alarming water quality test results, including dangerously high levels of E.coli bacteria and more than 133 hours of sewage discharge into the racecourse section of the river.
