Sir Steve Follows in Kylie’s Footsteps as the Newest Face of Specsavers
Sir Steve Redgrave has become the latest ambassador for Specsavers, joining a celebrity line-up that includes Kylie Minogue, Emma Bunton and Penny Lancaster.
Why Has Sir Steve Redgrave Become an Ambassador for Specsavers?
While the five-time Olympic gold medallist may seem an unexpected addition to the high street optician’s campaigns, Steve’s involvement has a far more personal purpose. Rather than promoting the latest eyewear trends alone, he is working with Specsavers to raise awareness of diabetic eye disease and the importance of regular eye screenings.
Steve was diagnosed with diabetes more than 20 years ago and has since spoken openly about managing the condition alongside his record-breaking sporting career. Through his new role, he hopes to encourage more people living with diabetes to prioritise their eye health and attend regular screenings.
Speaking during a recent Specsavers photo shoot, Steve said: “I’ve done many unusual things in my career, but this is the first time I’ve modelled eyewear.” He added: “Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common causes of sight loss in those of working age but regular diabetic eye screening can help to detect the early signs and allow you to take steps to prevent it causing long-term damage. Unfortunately, I am more aware than most of the importance of regular check-ups for those with diabetes so I hope that my involvement with this great Specsavers campaign can go some way to ensuring that everyone keeps on top of their eye health.”
Steve’s appointment as an ambassador reflects Specsavers’ continued focus on public health campaigns alongside its retail offering. By partnering with one of Britain’s most recognisable sporting figures, the brand aims to highlight the importance of regular eye tests and diabetic screenings to a wider audience.
