Since retiring from competition, Steve has remained closely involved with rowing. In addition to several mentorships with members of the rowing squad in Team GB, Steve has worked with people outside of rowing, including Mo Farrah, to share the benefit of his experience and understanding of competing at the highest level in sporting achievements.

In 2018, the Chinese Olympic Association announced Steve would become the national rowing squad's first ever performance director. Tasked with increasing their medal tally and building a workable model that would result in sustained success in the long term, Steve's expertise saw the squad gain its highest ever position in the medals table at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
